Learning objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Prepare a file Anchor accepts.
  • Read the preview and understand each row error.
  • Fix problems in the file and import safely.

What Anchor accepts

  • A CSV file saved as UTF-8, or an Excel .xlsx file. Older .xls files are not supported.
  • Required columns: name and price.
  • Recognised optional columns: SKU (also "code"), stock quantity (also "stock", "qty", "inventory"), description, category.
  • Up to 5,000 rows per import.

Preview before anything is saved

Open Products (the Catalog page), choose Import Catalog, pick your file and choose Preview. Anchor reports how many rows are ready and how many need attention. Nothing is saved until you choose Import.

Row errors and what they mean

  • "name is required": the row has no product name.
  • "invalid price": the price is not a number.
  • "invalid stock quantity": stock is not a whole number, or is negative.
  • "duplicate SKU": the same SKU appears on two rows of the file.
  • A missing required column stops the whole import and lists the headers Anchor found.

A preview with two problems

A made-up 120-row file.

  1. Preview: 118 rows ready, 2 need attention.
  2. Row 14: invalid price "$12,50" (a comma instead of a decimal point).
  3. Row 77: duplicate SKU "TEA-01", also seen at row 12.
  4. The owner fixes both rows in the spreadsheet, previews again (120 ready) and imports.

Practical exercise · in your catalog

Prepare a clean import file

  1. Make a spreadsheet with the columns name, price, sku, stock, description, category.
  2. Add five products, one per row, with no merged cells or blank rows.
  3. If you have an Anchor account, run Preview and read the result before choosing Import.

Preview never saves anything; only Import adds products.

Recap

  • CSV (UTF-8) or .xlsx, with name and price columns, up to 5,000 rows.
  • Preview shows ready rows and the reason for every flagged row.
  • Fix errors in the file, preview again, then import.
